Lock & Load

These pens are all made from Big Leaf Maple burl, most with dyes, then finished with CA.

The Lock & Load kit is a take off from the common bullet pen kit, with a different lever to activate the ink cartridge. The rifle shaped clip is also slightly altered from the original kit.

This kit is available with a gun metal or gold or chrome finish each with the copper tip. The top end also has a little detail

After turning the wood to size, it gets carefully sanded and inspected

My pens are dyed using a special light-fast dye dissolved in alcohol. The process includes a blending step that helps the colours absorb deeper into the grain and figure of the wonderful burl wood

After the dying process is complete, each pen gets 9 coats of CA glue as a finish that protects the wood from the acidic nature of the oils in the user’s fingers

After the protective finish is applied and allowed to cure, the finish is polished twice to bring up a beautiful luster.

Dyed Box Elder Burl Slimline Pen

Custom Colored Hand Made Wood PenMade with the traditional “Slimline” pen parts, this piece of box elder burl was dyed several times with various colour combinations. The black components were selected to compliment the colours very well. The ink refill is a Cross style and can be easily replaced. These Slimline pens write very well and they’re reliable in cold or hot weather.

Pumpkin Colored Box Elder Burl 24Kt Executive Pen

During a demonstration on colouring pens, I asked for suggestions. Someone shouted out Halloween and this is what I came up with. I call it Pumpkin colour. It’s made with a 24Kt Gold Executive kit and has a lot of character. 6 coats of superior protection from the harmful oils in our fingerprints and polished to a high shine, it is suitable for either a lady or a gentleman and  it writes wonderfully. Have a close look at the colours. Have an interesting colour or combination in mind? contact me to discuss having it on an heirloom quality pen.

Dyed Maple Burl Executive Pen

P1150020-3This pen is made with the Executive kit with a gun metal finish and a piece of Maple burl. The gun metal finish sets off the colours added to the wood. With one long piece of wood the pen is long enough for a large hand and thick enough for comfort. This is the second pen I made in the demonstration at the Greater Vancouver Woodturners Guild October 23rd meeting. An initial application of blue, sanded to expose some of the natural wood colour and then yellow applied on top. Alcohol was again used to blend the colours even more.

Dyed Box Elder Pen

P1150019-3This is the pen I finished in a demonstration at the Greater Vancouver Woodturners Guild meeting on October 23rd. The wood is Box Edler Burl and it’s coloured with Prismacolor markers. Notice how the colours blend together thanks to the application of alcohol. Purple is the colour chosen by the audience and the result holds true to that from a distance but up close, there’s a lot more going on in the colour. The mechanism is called the Executive. Operated by twisting the upper cap, it fits the users hand wonderfully.
